PIERO PERINO

A PASSION FOR PRODUCT

Piero

In Piero’s family you can feel passion for products. A passion deeply rooted in Biella region, where Piero was born on December 4th, 1900.

Fascinated by high quality fabrics, he started out as a cloth merchant, first selling the finest wools of Biella to some of the greatest tailors in Italy and subsequently working as a designer in some of Biella’s leading mills.

Piero had four children: Rosella, Clara, Giancarlo e Giorgio. Encouraged by father’s enthusiasm for fabrics Giancarlo and Giorgio rolled to the Istituto Tecnico Industiale Sella in Biella and soon become textile specialists in 1954.

In 1969 Giorgio moved to Spain working as product manager for one of the Cerrutti’s weavers in Vigo.

But his passion for fabrics was so strong that at the end of 1974 he returned to Italy and established his own brand, Stylbiella.

The development of the Stylbiella collection was made in a small design office in Biella, and all other processes like spinning, warping, weaving and finishing were outsourced in other specific locations always in Biella district.

Giorgio’s first collections were mainly composed by fancy fabrics, both for jacketing as well for trousers.

In this pioneer period Giorgio was entirely taking care of the product, from color selections, design and quality development , till the delivery of the pieces with his own car.

Passion was driving him in selling enthusiastically his own creations.

“ innovation beyond tradition: this is the Stylbiella’s key guidepost from the beginning ”

Stylbiella grew and another important part of the collection was added, the special “ceremony” collection in silk and wool.

In 1984 Giorgio and Giancarlo decided to invest in their own production plant;

“ his two sons were creating something he never stopped to dream about ”

the location they chose in VALDENGO was romantic , peaceful, surrounded by trees and corn fields and perfectly fitting a “family made with love “collection”.

“I still remember very well Piero’s happiness , while visiting the work in progress at the age of 84 , realizing that his two sons were creating something he never stopped to dream about,” said Giorgio.

Stylbiella continue to grow, but the 80’s were also the era of the emerging Italian designers like Versace or highly expanding brands like Ermenegildo Zegna and Hugo Boss.

The well known Stylbiella cerimonia suits collection was perfectly fitting a brand like VERSACE.

At the same time the Stylbiella accommodated perfectly the mood of that days in Zegna and the relation between the two companies became very strong: Stylbiella jackets could not be ever missed in Zegna collection.

Another key factor to Stylbiella’s success was the capacity of Giorgio to translate some of the typical scottish patterns in a soft fabric with perfect balance of blue and green shades.

It was the iconic BLACK WATCH of Stylbiella, used as well as a blazer or as a golf pant, from German specialist like Regent , Windsor, Schildt. Germany become the first export market and the cooperation with Hugo Boss tighter.

At the beginning of the 90’s the demand in British pattern characterizing the Stylbiella’s proposal was decreasing and the demand in new plain raised a lot.

“ It was the iconic BLACK WATCH of Stylbiella “

A new product was then introduced (in the collection) and became a distinguishing signature of the company: the chenille, a special made cotton yarn imitating the corduroy and the velvet but with a smoother touch , fluid and opaque look.

The success of this new material was immediate and exports were reaching Korea, Japan, USA and Europe.

New brands was introduced in Stylbiella’s portfolio and the company was working hand by hand with Etro and Missoni
